Protecting the Future of the Miramichi River

Save Miramichi Salmon exists to protect and restore one of New Brunswick’s most important ecosystems — the Miramichi River.

Atlantic salmon are in serious decline and, without action, are at risk from disappearing from this river entirely. Our mission is to bring awareness to this issue and advocate for practical science-based solutions that will restore balance and protect the future of the river for generations to come.

Why it Matters

The Miramichi is more than just a river — it supports local communities, traditions, and a way of life that has existed for generations. From anglers and outfitters to families and Indigenous communities, many people depend on a healthy river.

When one species becomes too dominant it can throw the entire ecosystem out of balance. That is what we’re seeing today.

SMS is working to ensure that Atlantic salmon — and other native species such as gaspereau, shad, and sea-run trout, have a real chance to recover and thrive.

A Balanced Approach

We are not calling for the elimination of any species. Striped bass have always been a part of the Miramichi ecosystem. What we are advocating for is balance.

Scientific research shows that maintaining a sustainable striped bass population is key to giving Atlantic salmon the opportunity to rebuild. Our goal is a healthy, balanced river where all species can coexist.

We Are Committed to:

1. Raising awareness about the challenges facing Atlantic salmon.

2. Sharing clear, science-based information with the public.

3. Advocating for responsible, sustainable fishery management.

4. Encouraging community involvement and support.

Real change happens when people come together. By supporting SMS, you are helping to protect a river, a species, and a way of life. Together, we can restore the balance to the Miramichi — and ensure it remains strong for future generations.
