Dear Mr Libby
As indicated in the letter to the Premier [and copied to your Minister] I am a member of a small newly formed nonprofit organization that was born out of a determination not to sit idle while DFO’s mismanagement of fisheries and striped bass in particular , resulted in the extirpation of Atlantic Salmon from the Miramichi .
Atlantic Salmon are facing many challenges across their range but to have the trustee for their management viz., DFO , standing idle while this threat continues, and even expands, is an egregious breach of proper fisheries management with dire consequences for the salmon and the river and both the indigenous and non-indigenous communities
We have the benefit of sound science and ample physical evidence that soundly rebuts the fallacious conclusions DFO relies upon to allow this threat to Atlantic Salmon to continue.
You will see from the attached letter and the supporting science that this crisis will deteriorate into a disaster unless immediate action is taken. This science is available at various locations including our web site “Save Miramichi Salmon” as well as Brad Burn’s Miramichi River Blog.
We are ready to challenge DFO in court and in the court of public opinion; but the simple fact is that we cannot do it without the help of the Province and thus our plea to the Premier and your Minister. Our efforts are entirely volunteer except for our legal counsel in Vancouver.
We have reached out to the Miramichi First Nations and recognize their constitutional rights and believe we have their support. We have further meetings pending to formalize this.
We are anxious to explore all support that the province may offer and would make ourselves available to meet with you and such other officials of the Province to pursue this .
We would ask for the opportunity to address this further at your earliest convenience .Our three Canadian directors, myself, Karl Wilson from Wilsons Camps in McNamee on the Miramichi and John Bagnall our science coordinator would be available for a Zoom call or with notice to come to Fredericton to meet
Best Regards
Alex
